To Everything, Turn, Turn, Turn…

Above: Washington Cathedral, last Sunday night…

  • Where George Bush Jr. declared the ‘War on Terror’ following 9/11 – then invading Iraq, acting on fraudulent intelligence, without any strategy for the future of Iraq as a democracy, but with the bonus of a stake in Middle Eastern oil, a testing ground for the development of American arms technology and a base for exerting influence in neighbouring Islamic states.
  • Where Donald Trump, at the traditional inauguration service in 2025, got a sermon about the central message of Biblical Christianity from the presiding bishop, in contrast to his abuse in using the cathedral as a backdrop for his media promotional act to win over the Christian vote, waving a big black Bible to declare himself a Christian.

A beautiful and defiant response to last week’s nasty media set-up of Ukrainian President Zelensky by Trump and his attack dog, Vance, in the Oval Office, to humiliate and discredit him.

As the Pete Seeger, quoting the Good Book in Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, ‘there is… a time for every purpose under heaven‘.

Now is the time to stand up against tyranny.
And what a smart way the people at the Washington National Cathedral have employed to do it.

Words to a song I wrote, just after the Russian invasion of Ukraine:

People of Ukraine
Words and Music, Geoff Boyce. March 2022

1. The people of Ukraine are facing fighting once again
But they’re u-nit-ed to hold onto their stor-y.
Mister Pu-tin, it seems, is pur-su-ing his dream
Of an em-pire of past guts and glory.

Refrain:
 Hold on …hold
on to peace,
Stand firm, sub-vert the power of demons.
Clev-er-ly fight to dis-arm the blight
Eroding love and our spirit of freedom.

Hold on hold on to grace,
Stand firm, sup-port the broken-hearted.
Those king-doms will crash, we mayl be left with the ash,
But we will grasp the true love of neigh-bour.

2. It takes cour-age to stand against a pow-e-rful man
Who’s using fear, con-trol, man-ipu-la-tion;
Head-long to de-struc-tion, victim of his own se-duc-tion
He calls the shots of in-tim-i-da-tion.

Refrain:

3. Clos-er to home, there are ‘lead-ers’ we know
Who’ve for-gott-en ‘the first must be last’;
Closed doors and se-crets, due pro-cess un-heed-ed,
Dest-roy-ing all frame-works of trust.

Refrain:

Additional Finale Refrain

Hold on …hold on…
Don’t let their fear and hate con-trol you
Let bitt-er-ness go, you’re too big for that low
Hold firm, with loving in your going

End: (Rit.) Hold firm, with loving in your going.

I am hoping to find someone who is willing to record and make available the song, ‘People of Ukraine’ to the public.

  1. Thanks Geoff, your song is still bang on. It does remind me to stop feeling so hopeless about the situation though. Helen Warman

    1. Sandy showed me the photo and I couldn’t sleep. I got up at 2am with the plaintiff, rich voice of Mary Travers (Peter, Paul and Mary) in my head, singing my song with her own inflections. Still hearing it – thanks Mary!
