The original Vine and Fig Tree video (above) was created as a meditation to be shown as part of ‘Prayers for Others’ during worship at a Uniting Church congregation in Melbourne on Sunday, March 23, 2025.
While reminding us of the horror and obscenity of war, the double imagery employed by the photographer in the video asks questions of us, we who live as relatively comfortable beneficiaries of hegemonic western power. The repetitive singing voices the insistence of the ancient prophet, goading us toward working toward a just and harmonious humanity, built on a productivity arising from the gifts of creation, rather than a destruction arising from the worst we think we can do to each other.
YouTube will not allow the video on its platform on the basis of its graphic imagery.
Respecting the sensitivities of the diverse local congregation who will view the video, it was decided to edit out some of the more confronting images and create a ‘lighter’ version (below).
